Vineyard Residence
Clayton Korte

Perched above 50 acres of vineyard and integrated into the hillside, this compact T-shaped home harmonizes with the landscape, placing primary living areas at grade for a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. The bedroom wing shields the house from prevailing winds, while private suites flank a central kitchen and living space that opens to two outdoor terraces—one overlooking the vineyard’s signature “caracol” rows, the other framing panoramic vistas. A one-room-wide plan ensures natural light and cross-ventilation throughout, and deep overhangs provide passive solar shading. Expansive glazing captures dramatic views, while a westward-sloping shed roof with photovoltaic panels offsets utility-provided energy. The exterior references regional agrarian structures, while interiors feature white oak paneling, hand-troweled plaster, and custom millwork. The result is a quiet, rustic elegance rooted in sustainability and a strong sense of place.
“This shows a really deft hand in creating spaces that are raw yet elegant, very livable, warm, and inviting. The overall attention to detail and warmth that comes through in the project, even though the structural integrity is exposed—it makes for an elegant plan, simple siting, and a great home.” —Chris Baribeau, FAIA
