About

From its modest beginning in 1950 as a 28-page mimeographed newsletter, Texas Architect has evolved into one of the most respected regional architectural periodicals in the nation.

Now published quarterly, with a special issue in September, Texas Architect is independently published by the Texas Society of Architects and informs a national readership about new work in Texas and work outside the state’s borders by Texas practitioners. Each edition features recently completed projects and other editorial content largely written by AIA members in Texas.

Mission

Texas Architect’s mission is to inspire, educate, and inform through thoughtful reporting on diverse issues affecting the built environment in Texas. We do this to foster a collaborative design culture, to support the profession, and to advance design excellence.

Guiding Principles

Promote excellence in journalism – Our purpose is to foster a culture of intellectual curiosity and tell stories that are informative and engaging. We adhere to standards of good journalism, which includes honesty, accuracy, and fairness in reporting. We recognize that constructive criticism is a valuable part of design culture, and we approach it with a spirit of camaraderie.

Embrace diversity – We aim to cover many types of projects and topics across a wide range of geographies, illuminate diverse professional paths and practitioners, and welcome contributions from varied and distinctive voices.

Act responsibly – We recognize the impact of design on our communities and natural environment and call out harmful practices and policies when necessary. We prioritize reporting on projects that embody the AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence.

Be transparent – We believe that communicating openly and creating transparent processes builds trust, results in better reporting, and fosters a more inclusive design culture.
