Roam Ranch

Baldridge Architects

Roam Ranch is a testament to rigorous modern design presented in a Central Texas vernacular of form, finish, and spirit. Designed for clients who sustainably raise bison and turkeys, the single-family home accommodates business operations, including podcasts and educational events. Programmatic spaces reside as volumes under a unifying roof gesture, with a Texas dog-trot carport rendered in polycarbonate to create a stunning entry and event space while allowing light into two preexisting structures. The design incorporated these buildings and an elegant but structurally challenged pole barn to create a cohesive compound. A raw stone hearth allows the floor to slip beneath with a 1/4-inch reveal, and a flitched wood and steel structure provides additional support at the eaves’ compound cantilevers. In the evenings, the carport glows like a lantern, signaling something special within.

“It’s a lovely project that’s very, very Texas but also charming in its environmental strategies with the use of the dog trot. How the architect stitched existing and new construction and created an incredible amount of circulation for wind to move through was quite compelling. The bars are articulated with incredibly well textured plaster walls that contrast with the rugged steel of the original barn siding. It’s really rich in the way the layers happen.” —Everald Colas, AIA, NOMA
