Vine Street Testing Center
Beck Architecture

An undisclosed medical board has constructed a new building that reflects the organization’s focus on wellness and sustainability while anticipating a demographic shift in the profession to 90 percent female. The center, conceived with the philosophy that “form follows practice and ritual,” integrates harmoniously into its tree-lined neighborhood. It comprises four interconnected levels, each tailored to specific activities throughout the year. The ground floor serves as a welcome center with bus drop-off and conference space. Above, a testing center provides a calming environment for in-person exams. The third level supports collaboration among industry leaders administering the exams, and the top level houses transparent administrative offices. A central atrium enhances connectivity and movement, linking the interior with the surrounding landscape. Below-grade parking frees the ground plane, creating a clear arrival sequence and improving pedestrian access.
“This is a project that really took health and wellness and community impact as part of its parti. We saw that brought to life in the way this building created an opportunity for natural light to filter into the spaces, the way it was laid out in section from more public to more private as you move up, and the sophistication of an internal stair that connected and really wove through the entire project.” —Ashley Rao, AIA
