Hotel Saint Augustine
Lake Flato Architects

Located in Houston’s Montrose district near the Menil Collection campus and Rothko Chapel, Hotel Saint Augustine responds to its rich cultural context while drawing inspiration from the neighborhood’s low-density, residential character. Occupying a tree-shaded block, the hotel is composed of five two-story buildings arranged around lush courtyards, gardens, and meandering paths. Open-air bridges and walkways connect the buildings, encouraging movement, discovery, and a strong connection to nature for guests. Gray Norman brick and combed ash wood reference both the Menil campus and the surrounding vernacular. The program includes a signature restaurant and lobby bar, an intimate event space, a circular cloistered pool, and 71 guest rooms, some with private outdoor living areas. Large windows, balconies, covered exterior stairs, and screened porches dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, creating an immersive guest experience.
“I think the architect has a particular interest in detailing not only on the edifice, but in how it relates to some of the hardscapes and softscapes of the landscape. This is really the way to do hospitality. It’s not only about being within your room, but about how it speaks to the outside and gives the guests a full experience. This project is exceptional in achieving this.” —Chris Baribeau, FAIA
