We all appreciated the layers of history, of site reclamation, and just the series of spaces that are created by this project, in addition to its tectonic execution.

Epoch Estate Wines’ 143-acre property encompasses the former York Mountain Winery, which was badly damaged by the 2003 San Simeon earthquake. To preserve the history of the century-old estate, the design called for a careful, selective demolition and reconstruction of the existing limestone, sandstone, and heavy timber-framing to create the Epoch Tasting Room, which is protected by a new, structurally sound and insulated roof assembly sympathetic to the agricultural vocabulary. The design also includes a board-formed concrete addition that houses code-compliant restrooms, storage, and environmental systems, which are largely underground and capped with a vegetated roof of native grasses.
