Anel Pasillas, Assoc. AIA, is a Project Manager at Riverbend Development in El Paso. Anel is an active member with the AIA El Paso chapter and is a part of the local Women in Architecture Committee. Learn more about Anel in the Q&A below!

What has been your involvement with AIA and TxA?

I’ve been a member of the organization since 2018, and my involvement has included serving on the 2022 Conference Committee for TxA’s Annual Conference & Design Expo in El Paso. In this role I orchestrated various tours and led the planning of the Women in Architecture (WiA) session for that year.

Following the impactful experiences from the El Paso conference, and how underrepresented this chapter was at the state level, I decided to join TxA’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee in 2023. Additionally, I became a member of WiA El Paso in 2020 and took on the role of co-chair in 2023. This position has provided me with the platform to further advance diversity and inclusion efforts within our chapter and beyond.

What is a professional accomplishment you are proud of?

My most significant professional achievement is the successful delivery of every project I’ve had the privilege to work on, ensuring that the client is satisfied and proud of the outcome. Throughout my career, I have worked on a diverse range of projects, spanning from tenant improvements to higher education and civic buildings. Witnessing these spaces being occupied and utilized is a rewarding aspect of my work, as it reflects my contribution to the community.

What have you gained/learned from your involvement with Women in Architecture?

My involvement with Women in Architecture has provided me with a platform to engage in discussions about leadership, volunteerism, and outreach opportunities both locally and at the state level. Through WiA, I’ve had the privilege to connect with college and high school students in our community and share insights and experiences as a minority woman in the profession.

Additionally, WiA has facilitated connections with women from across the state, as well as neighboring states and Mexico. This network has been invaluable for exchanging ideas, supporting each other’s endeavors, and fostering a sense of community.

Moreover, our local WiA committee is a diverse group of women and men from various professions who unite with a shared goal of supporting our community.

“I am deeply inspired by my female colleagues who boldly step into leadership roles, whether within the private or public sector. Their dedication and determination serve as a beacon for others, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse profession.”

Anel Pasillas, Assoc. AIA

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Do not hesitate to speak up and advocate for yourself! You never know who might be observing and seeking to emulate your example. Be proud of both your achievements and setbacks. It is through failures that we continue to learn and grow.

What aspect of the profession excites you the most?

What excites me most about architecture is the process of transforming a vision into reality. Collaborating with clients, contractors, and engineering teams to bring a project to life.

I am also excited by the profession’s continuous evolution and its adaptation to new practices and procedures for the built environment.

What building or space is on your bucket list to visit?

I would love to do a castle tour in Germany. Specifically, I want to see the Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau, Germany.

Who is someone that inspires you?

I find continual inspiration in the trailblazing efforts of women and minorities within our field. Particularly, I am deeply inspired by my female colleagues who boldly step into leadership roles, whether within the private or public sector. Their dedication and determination serve as a beacon for others, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse profession.
