Recently, Houston’s Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DRA) approved three quarters of a block bounded by Bell, San Jacinto, Leeland, and Fannin streets, currently the site of a Goodyear Auto Service Center. The Downtown Living Initiative has produced 1500 housing units in the neighborhood since 2012, placing the site in the middle of a burgeoning residential hotspot. The DRA’s president, Bob Eury, describes the future park as “a ‘third place’ that will anchor community life and foster experiences for Houstonians and visitors alike.”

Now that the site for the park has been chosen, the project will move forward into a community input phase, including an RFQ expected to be released in the near future. Construction is projected to begin in mid-2019.

The park is part of Houston’s Plan Downtown, a 20-year plan released last November, which calls for a combination of new parks and retrofitted open spaces to anchor communities, promoting increased activity through park design.
