Through the Urban Confluence Silicon Valley worldwide open ideas competition, the San José Light Tower Corporation is inviting architects, landscape architects, artists, urban planners, engineers, lighting designers, and students to submit ideas for activating the most critical urban park in the City of San José.

The goal of the competition is to provide a spectacular landmark design in the heart of Silicon Valley. The site, which rests at the confluence of the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, is located in a central park across from the future 6-8 million-sf Google Downtown West Mixed-Use Plan and just two blocks from Diridon Station, soon to be transformed into one of the United States’ most prominent transportation hubs.

Conceived as a gift to the City of San José, the landmark’s design should demonstrate the City’s unique position as Silicon Valley’s economic, cultural and political center. The competition seeks a transformative design incorporating dramatic lighting, a net-zero energy approach, and a physical presence illustrating Silicon Valley’s position as a bridge from past to present to future. Urban Confluence Silicon Valley can be a structure, an object, a sculpture, or a work of architecture.

The entry deadline is April 3, 2020. There is no fee to enter the competition, and multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged. Three finalists will be selected from the first phase of the competition and will be awarded a $150,000 stipend to refine their proposals.
